3 Golden Nuggets to Gaining that Competitive Edge Online

SEO (search engine optimization) has really evolved over the years (I’ve been doing this for over 10 years and have seen so much change that it makes my head spin just thinking about it).  One thing that remains constant however is the importance of SEO. In fact, I can say that without a doubt, SEO is becoming increasingly more and more important all the time.

We’ve all become so reliant on technology and getting what we need on the net that it’s hard to fathom that, only a few short years ago, the internet didn’t even exist!  Back at the beginning, it was the websites and online businesses that were king and SEO wasn’t something most companies even knew about – never mind optimizing their websites for. But as time went on and more and more companies got online, these companies realized the importance of SEO and search engine ranking in order to gain that edge above their competition. As the competition continued to grow more fierce, so did the need for SEO enhancements and the importance of gettingtop (page 1 or 2) listings in the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN Bing.  When you add the current economy downturn and uncertainty into the mix, things really start to heat up.

As much as I hate to bring up the economy (because we are already inundated with talk about our poor, failing economy everywhere we turn) I have to.  Not because I want to add to all the negative talk that is going on, but because the poor economy is actually playing a key role in how people are searching and shopping online these days.  More than ever before, people are comparison shopping. Even those who prefer to shop in traditional brick and mortal type store/businesses are doing a little comparison shopping and price matching on line first, before hitting the stores.  That’s why getting your website listed on the top page 1 of search engines like Google is even more crucial than ever before. To succeed in this day and age, you need to make sure that your website is one of the top performing web sites, so they will consider your business when they are doing their comparison shopping.  You also want to make sure your site is in tip-top form – that it is clear, accurate, and is easy to navigate through, so they can find what they are looking for easily and quickly. In these days of web 2.0, the power is now in the hands of the consumer, and if too many clicks are needed before they get to the products or services on your website, they’ll simply click off your website and go somewhere else. So being on top is only half the battle, once you have them, you need to keep them. That’s what website optimization is all about (and we’ll cover that in more detail, in a future article).  If done correctly, you can earn the business of your website visitors while they are doing their comparison shopping.

Another interesting tidbit about people’s shopping habits in this crazy economy is that, while people are always looking for a deal – they are not necessarily seeking out the cheapest price but rather, the best value for their money.  Rather than automatically lowering your prices like everyone does to try and gain their business, why not try building up the value?  Make yourself stand out from the crowd by adding some freebies or perks to win them over with the added value you offer!

So, the golden nuggets here to gaining that competitive edge?

  • Make sure your site is listed on top of the engines by using SEO tactics that work!
  • Make sure your site is a selling machine, fully optimized to convert your traffic into good old fashioned paying customers.
  • Consider bulking up your offerings, offering incentives or perks to increase the value, so people feel like they want to do business with you.

Stay tuned for some pretty sweet website optimization techniques and a really cool SEO trick that allows you to spy on your competitors a little bit!
